Harris A. Smith Building for Packaging Science & Graphics

Lord, Aeck & Sargent, in collaboration with Michael Keeshen & Associates, designed a new facility to house the Sonoco Institute on the campus of Clemson University. With a focus on the design of packaging, including graphics, innovations in prototyping and package manufacturing, the new building is a showcase for the University students to display and promote their designs.
The building houses various production laboratories related to material science, graphic communications and prototyping. Also highlighted are spaces for programs related to the Sonoco Institute and a design center for the program. The new facility includes faculty offices, “smart” classrooms, CAD and collaboration studios. Key design features include visibility of program process as it relates to the layout of spaces, building users, pedestrian circulation and building relationships.
This three-story, 27,000 sf teaching and research facility has achieved LEED Gold.
Lord, Aeck & Sargent performed the energy modeling, daylighting analysis and LEED administration for the Harris A. Smith Building. An optimized daylighting and solar control design will maximize energy savings from daylight harvesting. The facility also features water-efficient fixtures, low-emitting building finishes and full cut-off site lighting to minimize light trespass.
