Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
Birmingham, AL
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was built in 1911 and designed by African American architect Wallace A. Rayfield. The church became an icon in the Civil Rights Movement for its role in the Birmingham Campaign and youth marches of April and May of 1963 and for the tragic bombing of the church that occurred in September of 1963. These events were instrumental in leading to the creation and passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Prior to joining Lord, Aeck & Sargent, OJP Architects produced a historic structure report (HSR) and National Historic Landmark nomination for the church. The HSR documented the physical and social history as well as the current condition of the building and made recommendations for treatment. The church was designated a National Historic Landmark on February 20, 2006. Subsequent to the HSR, we served as the historic preservation consultant for the exterior restoration of the church, which was completed in late 2007.
