Lord, Aeck & Sargent focuses on six practice areas, each with its own specific subject matter expertise, and all with expertise in sustainable, or "green" design, which is a key component in all design projects. Since the culture of the firm is highly collaborative, it is not at all unusual to find experts from one area playing consultative roles on planning, programming and design projects from other area. The six practice areas are:
Science & Technology, which focuses primarily on college and university campuses, plans and designs life sciences, biotech and interdisciplinary science research laboratories as well as engineering labs, science teaching facilities and healthcare facilities. The practice area also designs medical clinics and diagnostic testing laboratories for the government sector; and applied research, life sciences and engineering labs for the private sector. Some specific areas of expertise include BSL-2 and BSL-3 containment labs, imaging facilities, nanotechnology facilities and animal research facilities.
Historic Preservation, which focuses on providing a comprehensive range of architectural services in both restoration and rehabilitation to government, education and other institutional clients. This includes everything from preservation planning – including pre-design and fund-raising packages – to the development of construction drawings for complete architectural restoration and rehabilitation. Highly specialized areas of expertise include condition assessments, historic structure reports, feasibility studies for the rehabilitation of historic properties, and campus preservation planning.
Arts & Culture, which is dedicated to the planning and design of museums. The Arts & Culture professionals have extensive experience with art museums, environmental museums, history museums, house museums, visitor’s centers and arts education centers.
Housing & Mixed Use, which works with developers, neighborhood groups, community planning and development corporations and municipalities and focuses on urban infill projects mainly consisting of multi-family housing and mixed-use residential/commercial developments, including projects with a student housing component. These include new construction as well as adaptive use, historic rehabilitation and urban design planning projects. The team also offers Atlanta-based developers expertise the City’s zoning ordinances and processes.
Education, which focuses on the academic sector. On college and university campuses, our professionals specialize in the planning and design of: academic learning centers; undergraduate science facilities; campus centers/student life facilities; undergraduate and graduate/married student housing; living-learning communities; and libraries/learning resource centers. The Education practice area also plans and designs interactive learning environments for private K-12 schools.
Urban Planning focuses on the design of walkable, livable urban communities and campuses. The collage of a community is impacted dramatically by buildings, sites, streets, parks, schools, campuses, corridors and centers that connect people to their surroundings. This practice area is key to fostering sensible spaces, community partnerships and interactions. With depth of experience in programming, site planning, district/sector plans and campus plans, LAS incorporates another important layer of design strategy. These services are often part of “due diligence” efforts that help define potential campus projects by serving as an objective urban designer/planner. We possess a multi-disciplinary staff that combine architectural and landscape architectural design with urban planning.
