University of North Georgia Campus Master Plan

Dahlonega, GA

Established through the consolidation of North Georgia College and State University and Gainesville State University, The University of North Georgia serves over 15,000 students spread over five campuses. Lord Aeck Sargent was selected to develop the first campus master plan for the newly consolidated university.

The Dahlonega campus is nearing its capacity, and the plan focused on improving the quality of facilities, respecting the historic fabric of the adjacent community and preserving historic resources on the campus, while improving pedestrian circulation and campus connectivity.

The Gainesville campus’ physical capacity for expansion and surrounding economic growth and development poise the campus for future growth. The master plan focused on creating a sense of place on a traditionally commuter campus, improving existing facilities, pedestrian connectivity, and anticipating the possible conversion to a residential campus.

The Oconee campus is one most highly utilized campuses in the University System, and the plan was charged with providing for additional growth with minimal increase in campus size, while creating a sense of place through the creation of campus green spaces.

The Cumming campus is also a commuter site serving students in a rapidly-growing portion of the University’s service area.

The completed master plan includes preservation planning for the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses, provides for future growth across all campuses, addressing the unique character and mission of each, while more fully integrating them into a unified whole.
